    A fresh coconut costs over a dozen yuan, yet a 1-liter pack of "100% coconut water" sells for only 9.9 yuan — at this price, can you really buy something purely natural?

    The Beijing News recently conducted a test: they sent four top-selling "100% coconut water" products to an authoritative European institution for testing. The results were surprising — despite the ingredient lists explicitly stating only "coconut water," all of them were found to contain added exogenous water or exogenous sugars.

    Currently, there is no unified standard for identifying coconut water, and the group standard T/CNLI 001-2025 Coconut Water does not contain relevant content either. Apart from water, natural coconut water mainly consists of sugars (2%-5%) and mineral elements (0.4%-1%). The ratio between these sugars is fixed. Much like a human fingerprint, it has its own unique "sugar profile." Once exogenous sugar is added, this natural balance is disrupted. Examining the natural composition and proportions of these major components helps in sourcing and cracking down on counterfeits.

    The combination of an Ion Chromatography system and Pulsed Amperometric Detection (IC-PAD) is globally recognized as the "gold standard" for carbohydrate analysis, providing a sharp eye to spot fake coconut water. Prin-Cen’s IC-50 series delivers several core advantages in this application:

    Applying this advanced method, Prin-Cen’s lab compared the sugar profiles of natural coconut water (from both young green coconuts and mature coconuts) with four store-bought brands. The findings revealed that some commercial coconut waters were indeed adulterated or not 100% pure.

    In authentic coconut water, the sugar composition is dominated by sorbitol, glucose, fructose, and sucrose. Meanwhile, oligosaccharides and polysaccharides with longer retention times than maltose are barely detectable, usually staying below 100 mg/L (remaining at trace levels in young coconuts, and even lower in mature ones). This means that in a pure, natural coconut water profile, you will almost never see a noticeable oligosaccharide peak.

    Using the IC-50 system, Prin-Cen’s laboratory compared the carbohydrate profiles of natural young coconuts, mature coconuts, and commercial products, yielding startling results. The profiles of two best-selling brands revealed additional oligosaccharide peak clusters following the maltose peak (indicated in the chromatogram below)—peaks that are completely absent in natural coconut water. This provides smoking-gun evidence of added exogenous sugars!
